Floating vs. Stuck In The Mud

Imagine a stream of water flowing through a field guided by banks and rocks as it navigates to its destination. Other streams flow into it and it flows into streams it joins.

On the surface of the stream are floating sticks of various shapes and sizes. Now imagine a single stick taller than the stream is deep. Imagine it jammed into the bed of the stream so that it stands firm with the water flowing against it and around it.

Think of the water as the internet driven changing world around us. The unpredictable flow of ideas, organic growth, risk. The sticks floating on the surface represent organizations that are responding to these ideas by embracing change each in their own capacity. Although the water is moving rapidly, the floating sticks are calm relative to the flow of the water.

The stick jammed into the stream bed represents a different type of organization.  It is responding to the changing world by standing firm.  It is battered by the floating sticks and constantly hammered by the force of new ideas and the changing world. More and more of its energy being spent clutching the bottom of the stream against the force of change.

There are some sticks that naturally or unexpectedly gather.  Sometimes in an eddy to pause. Sometimes in narrow passage to slow the stream or re-direct it.

When we understand our "stickness" we can understand how we fit into the puzzle.  Understanding our "stickness" will bring us face to face with our fear of risk and how we process change.  It will help clarify our capacity for processing new ideas and understanding our boundaries. It gives us the edge to be remarkable in an ever changing world.

Discover your "stickness" and go do remarkable things.
